James KAN started dancing in 2004, completing a 3-year diploma program at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) in Malaysia. He was awarded the Taiwan Scholarship in 2008. In 2012, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) from Taipei National University Of The Arts, School Of Dance.

A versatile dancer with great finesse, light and soul, Kan has learnt various forms and from these has created his own unique dance style. Testament to his artistry, Kan has been invited to perform in performances such as Jamu, Tapestry, Stepping Out!, the Balik Kampung series, Tari festivals, Sanggar Choreography, as well as international dance festivals in venues such as Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, London, Hong Kong, Australia, and China.

Kan has worked with numerous choreographers including Bulareyaung Pagarlava, Shu-Fen Yao, Xiao-Xuan Yang, Xiao-Xiong Zhang, Wong Kit Yaw, Hugo Fanari, Alexander Whiteley, Umesh Shetty, Joseph Gonzales, Greame Collins, and others.

His choreographic pieces include SHE, Alone, Per-3, 11:59pm, Utopia, Dreams, Rabbit Hole. Utopia garnered the Merit Award in the 2011 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition, while Dreams won the Gold Medal in the 2012 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition. Another work, The Lost Box, was a finalist piece in the ‘Dance Escalator’ choreography competition organised by Malaysia’s MyDance Alliance.

Kan recently completed his first full-length solo contemporary dance piece titled Fragment, which he will be presenting for CONTACT 2013 as choreographer and performer.
