The School of Dance at LASALLE College of the Arts consists of both a Diploma in Dance Programmme and a BA (Hons) Dance programme. Taking our cue from Singapore’s cultural positioning, the School embraces both the East and West in its content, approach and philosophy.
LASALLE’s Diploma in Dance uses a wide range of training techniques and dance styles, including Hip Hop, Ballet and Contemporary Dance, to develop students into confident performers. Graduates are expressive and imaginative dancers who confidently meet the artistic and commercial demands of the performing arts industry in Singapore and the region. Students benefit from a variety of projects and practical experiences that provide a sound base for future specialisation in choreography, education, management and research.
The BA (Hons) Dance Programme is an elite and responsive programme where the lecturers take a personal interest in the well-being and development of each student. Mentoring of inter-disciplinary collaborative projects creates a stimulating and encouraging environment for exploration. International guest artists contribute to the programme by sharing their work and creative processes with the students. Through this training with a current, creative and collaborative focus, students emerge as internationally competitive dance artists willing to test and expand the definitions of dance.
Choreographer: Foo Yun Ying
FOO Yun Ying completed her Masters of Arts in Contemporary Dance at the London Contemporary Dance School in 2009 whilst on the Shell-NAC Arts Scholarship. Since returning to Singapore in 2009, she has performed and toured with T.H.E Dance Company, Frontier Danceland, and is one of the founding members of the newly established Re:Dance Theatre.
Foo has choreographed works for T.H.E Second Company including Just another piece and Equilibria, and presented the work or so it seems… at the Singapore Arts Festival 2011, as part of the Platform Campus series titled In The Middle. She also teaches at the LASALLE College of the Arts, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, the School of the Arts, and several dance studios.
Choreographer: Melissa Quek
Early in her career, Melissa QUEK danced for both local choreographers and international companies such as Post-Ego (South Korea) and Ad Deum Contemporary Dance Company (Houston). After which, with a coveted teaching assistantship, Quek pursued her Masters in Dance Cultures at the University of Surrey, where she won the Janet Adshead award for her MA dissertation. Quek is currently leading the Diploma in Dance and BA(Hons) Dance Programmes in LASALLE.
She has guest taught at institutions of Higher Education such as the University of Surrey and University of California, Irvine and serves as a consultant for local dance education programmes.
In the past year she has contributed to the creation of several cause based performances and workshops. One of which was Stride with Pride, a performance aimed at increasing respect for wheelchair users. In May she collaborated on a visceral multi-disciplinary performance RE:Looking at RE:Gina presented around and within The Substation.
