NUS DANCE SYNERGY

Formed in 1978, the National University of Singapore (NUS) Dance Synergy has since been striving to promote dance as a modern art form that incorporates elements of jazz, modern, lyrical and contemporary dance. Led by Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Mr. Fan Dong Kai; Technique Tutor, Mr. Albert Tiong, and the management team of NUS Centre For the Arts, NUS Dance Synergy stands by its strong philosophy of encouraging everyone and anyone to take up dancing, regardless of age or background.

NUS Dance Synergy has also been grooming their young talents and expanding their repertoire of original works that seek to challenge the boundaries of expression in movement that constantly evokes feelings in those watching. Other than performing at various public events in Singapore, the group also often conducts dance workshops to youth in various schools, fostering a welcoming environment that expose youths to contemporary dance.

Celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year, NUS Dance Synergy looks forward to a new chapter in history as they collaborate with professional dance company, Re: Dance Theatre, and present a full-length work under NUS Arts Festival 2014.

Choreographer – Albert Tiong

Albert TIONG graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts on scholarship in 1996. He was a professional dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan from 1996 to 1999, guest artist with Hong Kong Dance Company in 2000, and principal dancer with Odyssey Dance Theatre Singapore from 2000 to 2003. He was the Singapore representative for World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific dance Bridge 2007 Artist Showcase, where he choreographed a solo on himself, Heart Sutra.

As an educator, Tiong teaches contemporary dance and yoga extensively in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He is currently an adjunct lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

Tiong was the Resident Choreographer and training master for Frontier Danceland from 2007 to 2011. He created Self Scan for Singapore Arts Festival – Arts On the Move 2007, co-choreographed Something Wrong (2007), Memory (2007) and The Master and Mistresses (2008). He created a full-length work, Beg Your Pardon? (2009) on the company and in 2010 set another solo, Moving Words on himself for 02-Square Series 9, D1M3 – One Dance, Three Mutations. His most recent works for Frontier Danceland were Second Chance for Contact 2010, Heart’s Realm for Colorado College International Dance Festival and In the Light of the Day for Contact 2011.

In January 2012, Tiong founded Re:Dance Theatre, a company that is defined by its commitment to the development and increasing appreciation of contemporary dance in Singapore and the region. He hopes to continue to appreciate, create and inspire.
