Tadashi Shimada

Born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1986, Tadashi SHIMADA studied painting in his early childhood years. At 19, he performed in UPS Academy, a school production directed by Narahashi Yoko. It was there that he first experienced Physical Expression as an art form. In the following year, Shimada presented the work Hirugao and has since dedicated his career to focusing on solo performances. Shimada has also studied with the choreographer Suzuki Tomohisa.

At this year’s Yokohama Dance Collection, Shimada received the Encouragement Prize for his work, twilight, which will also be presented at the M1 Open Stage 2013.

Shimada’s Dance Philosophy:
To live,
To accumulate experience through everyday life.
To me dance equals everyday life.
I can draw no clear line between them.
My work is constructed quietly, from observations of everyday life.
I pursue what is happening now, in this moment, and make small adjustments.
My aim as a living being is improvisation that continues to live on in the present.
