Billed for our bold curation, residency programmes, commissioning of local and international works across several platforms, as well as a smorgasbord of workshops and technique classes, the annual M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival (CONTACT), presented by Singapore’s leading contemporary dance company, The Human Expression (T.H.E) Dance Company, is led by Festival Director and Artistic Director of T.H.E, Kuik Swee Boon.

Since we began in 2010, CONTACT has become one of the pillar events for the contemporary dance scene in Singapore. Platinum sponsor of T.H.E, M1 Limited, came onboard as the Festival’s title sponsor in 2014, hence leading to our current Festival name.

We have grown to be a prominent contemporary dance festival in the region, establishing partnerships with other Asian festivals such Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival and Odoru Akita International Dance Festival in Japan and New Dance for Asia – NDA International Festival in South Korea.

In 2017, CONTACT was revamped with a fresh focus on supporting and featuring up-and-coming local independent dance artists, and our dates shifted from the year-end to the mid-year period. Since then, the 8th and 9th editions of the Festival also saw the incorporation of Dance at Dusk, a non-ticketed, accessible production at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, designed specially for audiences new to the multifaceted art form of contemporary dance. Off Stage, an intimate studio sharing of works-in-progress by local dance artists in different stages of their creation processes, was also introduced in 2017 and 2018.

In the recent years, we have also increased our network to include other international partners such as Machol Shalem Dance House in Jerusalem, Israel, Supercell – Festival of Contemporary Dance in Brisbane, Australia and New Italian Dance (NID) Platform in Italy, alongside long-time collaborator MASDANZA International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands in Spain.

M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival has become a staple of the Singapore dance scene, and aims to dispel the myth of incomprehensibility while presenting quality international and regional works and championing new local artists.
