Fondly known as “CONTACT” to the local dance community, the annual M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival, helmed by The Human Expression (T.H.E) Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Kuik Swee Boon, began in 2010 simply to promote contemporary dance in Singapore. Since then, it has become a pillar event, bringing growth to our local dance scene. Platinum sponsor of T.H.E, M1 Limited, came onboard as the Festival’s title sponsor in 2014, hence leading to our current Festival name.
With the belief that contemporary dance represents an invaluable medium in society through which people can come together and share an experience, even if each of us sees the world in different ways, we hope to rouse curiosities, challenge perceptions, connect people and engage in deeper life conversations through the various shows, classes, workshops and talks in CONTACT.
Over the years, we have grown in our prominence in the region, establishing a network with other Asian festivals such as Odoru Akita International Dance Festival and Kogane Asian Dance Platform in Japan, Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance), New Dance for Asia – NDA International Festival and Duri Dance Theatre, Seoul, in South Korea, H.D.X. Hong Kong Dance Exchange, CDE Springboard in Macau and Fang Mae Khong International Dance Festival in Laos. We have also increased our network to include other international partners such as Machol Shalem Dance House in Jerusalem, Israel, Supercell – Festival of Contemporary Dance in Brisbane, Australia and New Italian Dance (NID) Platform in Italy, alongside our long-time collaborator MASDANZA International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands in Spain.
In 2017, CONTACT was revamped with a fresh focus on supporting and featuring up-and-coming local independent dance artists, and our dates shifted from the year-end to the mid-year period. The 8th, 9th and 10th editions of the Festival also saw the incorporation of Dance at Dusk, a non-ticketed, free production at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, developed in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and designed specially for audiences new to the multifaceted art form of contemporary dance.
Off Stage, an intimate studio sharing of works-in-progress by local and Southeast Asian dance artists in different stages of their creation processes, was also introduced in 2017 and has since become a mainstay in the Festival.
”M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival has become a staple of the Singapore dance scene, and aims to dispel the myth of incomprehensibility while presenting quality international and regional works and championing new local artists.Bakchormeeboy2018
