Albert Tiong

Biography

Albert TIONG graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts on scholarship in 1996. He was a professional dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan from 1996 to 1999, guest artist with Hong Kong Dance Company in 2000, and principal dancer with Odyssey Dance Theatre Singapore from 2000 to 2003. He was the Singapore representative for World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific dance Bridge 2007 Artist Showcase, where he choreographed a solo on himself, Heart Sutra.

Tiong was the resident choreographer and training master for Frontier Danceland from 2007-2011. His most recent works for Frontier were: Second Chance for CONTACT 2010, Heart’s Realm for Colorado College International Dance Festival and In the Light of the Day for Contact 2011.

As an independent artist, Tiong has been commissioned to create works in high-profile showings such as the Esplanade da:ns Festival 2008 and the M1 Fringe Festival 2010. Tiong has also been invited for two consecutive years as guest choreographer for the Singapore Management University Arts Festival 2009 and 2010. Other works of his include Memory for Terpischore 2010 – Unvelings, NUS Arts Festival 2010 and Vary and Vary 2 for LASALLE College of the Arts – Esplanade da:ns Festival 2010 and 2011.

As an educator, Tiong teaches contemporary dance and yoga extensively in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He is currently a lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

In January 2012, Tiong founded Re: Dance Theatre, an up-and-coming local contemporary dance company.
