Our dance version of the open-mic session, where artists share 10min contemporary pieces in a relaxed environment – 9 works are from 13 countries are selected via an Open Call and features experimental, unconventional ideas straddling theatre, music, multimedia, performance art, and dance.

Embrace the openness and inclusivity of M1 Open Stage, which promises an eclectic and unexpected mix of performances, with two showings in a single day featuring different artist line-ups from diverse cultural backgrounds and dance styles. This year’s festival also include guest artists from our festival collaborators, the Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival (Japan), and N.D.A International Dance Festival (South Korea).

featured artists

Ong Yock Lock

Ong Yong Lock is co-founder and Artistic Director of Unlock Dancing Plaza. He was formerly a dancer with Hong Kong Dance Company and City Contemporary Dance Company, and founded the South "ASLI" Workshop.

Kim Seo-Youn

Seo-Youn graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree at Korea National University of Arts. She has participated in Several projects hosted and sponsored by R.se Dance Company and Korean National Contemporary Dance Company and at the same time, she participated in Young choreographers festival, International Modern Dance Festival (Modafe), NDA International Festival and New generation with her own choreography of Korea.

Kim Kwang Min

Kwangmin is a choreographer, leder and Seed Dance Project Group Artistic Director since 2010. He is known as one of the most influential young choreographers in Korea and remembered through his best repertoire, Interaction.

Hong Kyunghwa

Kyunghwa is a choreographer and Art Director of Dance Project Kalon. She graduated from the Department of Dance in Kyunghee University and completed the doctorate program in the Department of Performing Arts in Kyunghee University. She was elected as the Young Frontier by the Korean Culture and Arts Committee in 2011.

Pakhamon (Much) Hemachandra

Pakhamon professionally trained at the Victorian College of The Arts (VCA) at The University of Melbourne, Australia and attained a Bachelor of Dance (2009-2011). She has toured internationally with EDge Postgraduate Dance Company of London Contemporary Dance School, The Place (UK) under the mentor of Jeanne Yasko. In 2014, Pakhamon has completed her Master’s degree in Contemporary Dance Performance from LCDS, The Place.

Kevin Polak

Kevin trained at Brabant Conservatory (Fontys) in Tilburg and was a former dancer at NDT II, where he worked with well known choreographers (Jiri Kylian, Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duate, Amanda Miller). In 2013 he founded KheN with Ning Xi. Together they give KheN workshops for everybody and produce theatre productions.

Wang Wei Wei

Wei Wei graduated from Chinese Guangdong Dance School and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. Formerly a professional dancer with Arts Fission Company in Singapore since 2010.

Mia Cabalfin & Rhosam Prudenciado Jr.

Mia and Rhosam are a choreographic duo based in the Philippines. They have worked with Kyoto Arts Center as artists-in-residence, and with Japan Foundation, representing the Philippines for the "MAU" commission directed by kabuki grandmaster Kanjuro Fujima.

Eng Kai Er & Sviatlana Viarbitskaya

Eng Kai Er (Kai) and Sviatlana Viarbitskaya (Sveta) met in 2009 when they both lived in Stockholm. Together, they have created full-length performances, mid-length performances, and experimental happenings in Stockholm and even when Sveta moved to Tolouse in 2011 and Kai Er to Singapore in 2013.

Ronnarong Khampha

Khampha studied Javanese and Balinese dance in Solo (Surakarta), Indonesia for two years (2006-08), and Japanese Noh Drama for six months in Kyoto (2010). He has developed his own style using old-style dance as the base, venturing into new aesthetics.

Andara Moeis

Founder of Jakarta's The School of Movement, Andara Moeis has trained at the renowned PARTS Brussels and has been recognised for her efforts by Kelola Foundation's "Empowering Women Artists" grant.

Ning Xi

Ning Xi founded KUN in 2012 to integrate her 8 years of traditional chinese dance training and western technique. She co-created 'There's Me in Meeting' with HZT (Het Zuidelijk Toneel) and founded KheN with Kevin Polak in 2013.

Anna Borràs

Anna graduated from Institut del Teatre from Barcelona in 2010 and was awarded 1st solo prize in contemporary dance at Roseta Mauri; a finalist at the X Certamen de Danza Burgos-Nueva York, semifinalist at the 18th Internatonal Solo-Tanz Festival in Stuttgart.

Danang Pamungkas

Danang was a main dancer at the Mangjunegaran Palace of Surakarta, where her learned traditional Javanese dance and has worked with Cloud Gate Dance Company of Taiwan Artistic Director Lin Hwai Min in Taiwan during his professional dance career.
