Albert Tiong

A graduate from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts on scholarship in 1996, Albert Tiong was a professional dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan from 1996 to 1999, guest artist with Hong Kong Dance Company in 2000, and principal dancer with Odyssey Dance Theatre Singapore from 2000 to 2003. He was the Singapore representative for World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific Dance Bridge 2007 Artist Showcase, where he choreographed a solo on himself, Heart Sutra.

As an educator, Albert teaches contemporary dance and yoga extensively in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He is currently a lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and NUS Dance Synergy.

Albert was also the resident choreographer and training master for Frontier Danceland from 2007-2011. He created Self Scan for Singapore Arts Festival – Arts On the Move 2007, cochoreographed Something Wrong (2007), Memory (2007) and The Master and Mistresses (2008). He created a full- length work, Beg Your Pardon? (2009) on the company and in 2010 set another solo, Moving Words on himself for 02-Square Series 9, D1M3 – One Dance, Three Mutations. His most recent works for Frontier were Second Chance for Contact 2010, Heart’s Realm for Colorado College International Dance Festival and In the Light of the Day for Contact 2011.

As an independent artist, Albert was commissioned to create Checkmate for Esplanade da:ns Festival 2008 under its Artist Residency programme. He was invited for two consecutive years as guest choreographer for Singapore Management University Arts Festival 2009 and 2010, where Contrary and Urban Delve were presented respectively. His other commission was the full length piece The Passing, presented at the M1 Fringe Festival 2010. Other works of his include Memory for Terpischore 2010 – Unvelings, NUS Arts Festival 2010 and Vary and Vary 2 LASALLE College of the Arts – Esplanade da:ns Festival 2010 and 2011, Grapple for LASALLE College of the Arts – Esplanade da:ns Festival 2013, Touch for LASALLE College of the Arts – Esplanade da:ns Festival 2014, as well as full-length pieces Whisper of The Tempest and Lost Days. He has also created a double bill production In The Light Of The Day and A Moment In Time for NUS Centre For the Arts and ExxonMobil Campus Concerts, Three of Something (2012) and Bed (2013) for CONTACT 2013, full-length piece Revisit the Sunflower for M1 Fringe Festival 2013, full-length pieces Traces for NUS Arts Festival 2014 and The Steps for NUS Dance Synergy 2015. Traces won the Production of the Year at Tan Ean Kiam Arts Awards in 2014.

In 2017, Albert created a brand new work, Rising Winds, on T.H.E Second Company, which was performed in the M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival 2017, alongside Touch, which was presented in a different programme in the same festival and selected to be showcased in the next Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival 2018 in Japan. Albert has also been invited to carry out academic exchanges with the Beijing Dance Academy in October 2017.
