This workshop invites you to an intense physical training based on body movement in contact with the floor and with the body of another person. By learning short movement phrases combined with acrobatic elements, we will look for the flow of movement, conscious transfer of body weight, moments of suspension and interaction between movement and breath. Part of the workshop will be also devoted to improvisation of tasks and movement inspired by imagination, enriched with the tasks and inspirations gained by Ilona during her stay in Israel where she participated in an intensive by Vertigo Dance Company and attended Gaga classes in Tel Aviv.

Festival Director Kuik Swee Boon will give you a firsthand experience of “Hollow Body” and a glimpse of the company’s repertoire.

With a unique brand of highly physical and kinetic works, T.H.E Dance Company is one that digs deep into the universal human experience. At the heart of its works lies a connection with heritage and collective history as Singaporeans, juxtaposed with incisive, insightful observations on modern society: elements that set apart the company’s repertoire of original creations.

A continual pursuit of authentic expression led Artistic Director, Kuik Swee Boon,  to initiate the “Hollow Body” methodology. This methodology is now part of the company artists’ daily training towards becoming all-rounded performers who convey the essence of their identity and lived experiences through the full spectrum of physical, emotional, philosophical and meaningful expression.

Bound Flow

DATE / TIME

Friday 19 July, 12pm – 1:30pm

CONDUCTED BY

Josh Martin

LEVEL

B/I

This class revolves around Company 605’s movement vocabulary and improvisational tasks from current repertoire. Combining techniques and styles found in Company 605’s working language, exercises are aimed at building strength and speed, developing bound flow patterning, and finding groove. Tasks are given to acknowledge the weight of the body, both resting and moving through space, to discover instinctual movement pathways and to utilise the natural momentum that this weight can create.

Participants will be exploring the body’s relationship with the floor, articulation and isolation of body parts at various levels, and how to safely carry out large, athletic movement while maintaining a raw and powerful execution.

The piece performed in M1 Open Stage, Leftovers, deals with changing perceptions of time in performance. Hence, in this class, there will be a focus on multiple techniques and improvisational tools surrounding the warping of time and space within the body to find unexpected movement patterns, and new physicality.

Trying Again

DATE / TIME

Friday 19 July, 2pm – 3:30pm

CONDUCTED BY

Jan Möllmer
Tsai-Wei Tien

LEVEL

B/I

This workshop makes the participants dive into movement based ideas and concepts of the Peculiar Man company. The participants will be guided through tasks that share Jan Möllmer’s and Tsai-Wei Tien’s experiences in dance and theatre.

The design of this workshop is inspired by a roller coaster ride: challenging the participant to go through various feelings and physical stages, changing from one task to another within minutes. In this matter this workshop aims to make the participant TRY things over and over again, from 0 to 100, utilising energies that are rarely used.

Möllmer and Tien will propose simple ideas that rather ask for why a person moves than for how a person moves. They then will propose approaches on how to perceive these ideas in the most generous and genuine way possible for the participant. We will run, talk, scream, shake, push, pull, dance, try and try again. In a playful environment we will discover and challenge our movement possibilities and introduce groundbreaking theatrical ideas.

This workshop does not only target professional dancers but people from any background who have experiences in moving their body. The workshop welcomes support, action and fearlessness.

Resonant Architectures

DATE / TIME

Sunday 21 July, 12pm – 1:30pm

CONDUCTED BY

Daniele Ninarello

LEVEL

I/A

We will work on the principles of attention and concentration, using devices that relate the body with the architecture that hosts it, exploring the concepts of resonance, association and projection.

The first segment will be dedicated to exercises aimed at listening to the body deeply, understanding its dynamics through weight, pressure and joint mobility. This will give us a body that is ready and attentive. For the second segment, we will take time to study choreographic scores to verify the instruments experimented and acquired previously.
