An artist-led Festival that pursues an attitude of openness where every individual’s point of view is valued, M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival will be embarking on our next decade of contemporary dance in 2020. Unique for having distinct platforms that present a spectrum of contemporary dance works, we are looking for the following:

  • DiverCity: Exceptional budding dance-makers in Singapore who would like to develop an existing or new idea into a complete work. DiverCity is a showcase of fresh, made-in-Singapore works, highlighting the bold energy and dynamism of our evolving local dance scene.

  • M1 Open Stage: Tour-ready cutting-edge short solos or duets from all over the world, especially from Southeast Asia. M1 Open Stage is a robust buffet of selected short works from all over the world, creating a space for local, Southeast Asian and international artists to share the stage and connect.

  • Off Stage: Dynamic new works-in-progress from Singapore and Southeast Asia. Off Stage is an intimate studio sharing where selected local and Southeast Asian artists present their works-in-progress in various stages of development to audiences who are invited to watch and respond.

Eligibility Criteria

DiverCity: Applicants must be based in Singapore and have substantial industry experience in choreographing a solo, duet, or on a small group of dancers. The first draft of the work should be shown to the Festival team by end-April 2020.

M1 Open Stage: Applicants from Singapore, Southeast Asia and all over the world are welcome to apply. Submitted works must be tour-ready and no longer than 20 minutes in duration, as selected works will be programmed in a mixed bill.

Off Stage: Applicants must be from Singapore or Southeast Asia. Please note that this is a studio sharing of works-in-progress.

 

Tentative Performance Dates

DiverCity: 16 – 17 June 2020

M1 Open Stage: 11 – 13 June 2020

Off Stage: 14 – 15 June 2020

 

Provisions

DiverCity:

  • Artist fees for the selected choreographer and up to 2 of his/her collaborators (inclusive of dancers). Fees will commensurate with role and experience, subject to the Festival’s budget.
  • Rehearsal space.

Space is subject to the availability of T.H.E Dance Company’s studio or M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival’s partners, with a maximum provision of 90 hours for the entire creation and rehearsal period. 

  • Marketing and publicity support.
  • Reasonable production support of up to SGD800. Technical requirements should be simple or scalable and are subject to evaluation by the Festival team.

M1 Open Stage:

  • A small performance honorarium, accommodation and per diems for a tour party of up to 2 artists/personnel (inclusive of collaborators and technical staff if necessary) for international applicants residing outside of Singapore. Please note that we do not support the cost of airfares, travel insurances and visas. Selected applicants based overseas may also be asked to teach a class or a workshop during their time in Singapore, which will be remunerated.

If the total number of artists/personnel exceeds 2, the applicant shall also bear the cost of honorariums/fees, accommodation and per diems for any additional artist or personnel required to travel as part of the tour party, on top of the cost of airfares, travel insurances and visas.

  • Marketing and publicity support.
  • Reasonable production support in a configured black box venue.

Technical requirements should be simple, scalable and are subject to evaluation by the Festival team. The estimated time given to each work for setup, simple light plot and rehearsal is 1.5 hours.

  • An opportunity for the work to be invited by the directors of our international partner festivals for future performances.

Terms and conditions of this opportunity will be separately discussed upon invitation. Please note that invited artists will be representing M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival. M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival and our respective festival partners reserve the right to have the final say over all matters pertaining to the invitation process, outcome and provisions for artists of invited works.

Off Stage:

  • Marketing and publicity support.
  • Reasonable production support.

Technical requirements should be simple or scalable and are subject to evaluation by the Festival team. Applicants should take into consideration that this platform is held in a dance studio setting.

  • Facilitated post-show discussion and feedback session with audience, local practitioners and the Festival’s overseas guests.
  • Please note that there is no provision of artist fees for this platform. For selected Southeast Asian applicants residing outside of Singapore, the Festival does not provide airfares, but accommodation and per diems will be subsidised for no more than 2 pax.
