Asian Festivals Exchange (AFX)

6 - 7 December 2016, 8pm

Esplanade Theatre Studio

The Asian Festivals Exchange (AFX) continues to spark intriguing cross-cultural conversations in artistic residencies that take place in Singapore and Seoul: South Korean partners Choi Minsun and Kang Jinan of Seoul Dance Collection’s award-winning coterie, stand out for their immensely watchable chemistry with T.H.E Second Company’s Jackie Ong joining the choreographic duo as a dancer, for a new creation residency.

The collaboration of T.H.E Associate Artist / founding member Zhuo Zihao and returning Festival guest Miwa Okuno, a Yokohama Dance Collection prizewinner, is one power pairing. Choreographing and performing alongside T.H.E Second Company’s dancers, the duo is a true match of technical prowess, pure physicality and a shared love for multimedia and dance videography.

New to AFX is the pairing of New Zealand choreographer Sarah Foster-Sproull with T.H.E Second Company. Selected by the Asia New Zealand (ANZ) through a nationwide Open Call, Foster-Sproull’s proposal stands out for its topical exploration of mass human migration and the surreal ‘body-based’ images she creates.

How much can I fully understand me, myself?
Searching for answers that might not even make sense after all.
The relationships without,
what is there that is not too weird for me to look for?

Working in residency starting September, New Zealand’s Sarah Foster-Sproull brings her brand of surrealistic magic to In the Distance, a new work about migratory journeys.

Migration, exodus, diaspora, relocation, movement.

In The Distance expresses human interactions as a form of migration, where dancers magnetise or repel their bodies, harmoniously ‘flock’ as a group through space, or discordantly interact with each other. This work speaks about human connections dancing the line between being an individual and becoming part of a group- from manipulation, to metamorphosis, to raw human interaction.

Sarah Foster-Sproull is supported by Creative New Zealand and The Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Jackie Ong (Singapore) x Choi Minsun & Kang Jinan (South Korea)

82 vs 65

Performers and Set Designers: Kang Jinan, Choi Minsun
T.H.E Second Company Dance Artist: Jackie Ong
Original Lighting Designer: Jaeeok Kim

Cultures collide as Singaporean dancer Jackie Ong and South Korean creators Choi Minsun and Kang Jinan come together in a new work titled 82 vs 65.

82 vs 65 takes on a conceptual approach in negotiating the cultural differences between Singapore and South Korea through physical and gestural wit. Using the polarities as productive engagements, the work encourages us to deconstruct and challenge respective cultural norms in a more collaborative manner. 82 vs 65 ultimately aims to reflect on the diversity yet acknowledge the collective energy of individuals living in an internationalised and multicultural world.
